I couldn't help noticing how lovely everyone's gardens and accent landscaping was looking. It seemed like everything was in bloom. I'm not a gardener but I really appreciate the effort and love people seem to put into their homes –– so much so, I kept forgetting to take pictures.

But here's a couple:

Along Fulton near Dwight Way.
Further up Oxford near Haste.

I really liked how the tree looked against the home's chimney.

It was pretty warm and sunny out. A beautiful day as mentioned. It was almost a bit too warm for me. We kept our masks on, and as we walked, I had some trouble breathing. Partly because I've been sitting around the house more than usual for the past 3 months, and partly because of my janky lungs. With the weather so nice, and looser restrictions, maybe more walks are in order.

<span style="font-family: "american typewriter";">The Shelter at Home for Alameda County is easing up.. Masks/face coverings are still mandatory when out and about or in stores, but we're seeing a loosening in restrictions: just in time for the very important global protests! We'll see how it works out, healthwise. For now, we who can't be in crowds because of health can find other ways of giving our support.
<span style="font-family: "american typewriter";">

<span style="font-family: "american typewriter";">This post is mainly a way for me to ease myself back into blogging. Now the semester is over, things aren't slowing down. Summer 2019, I was looking at participating in 2 MA programs, thinking I could enroll part-time in one program, while enrolled fulltime in another! <span style="font-family: "american typewriter";">I am rethinking that!
<span style="font-family: "american typewriter";">

The pandemic didn't have a lot to do with it, as much as things going on in my family life. School and the COVID19 pandemic just made the stress a LOT worse. Dropping the online course I was taking in another program seemed the only choice I had. Sadly it also meant I had to be willing to take an "F" in a Masters program. In the end, because of the pandemic, we were allowed to petition for a 'credit/ no credit' and that saved me. I'm still on probation in that program (having only taken 1 credit Fall 2019 and passed) but I"m not 'in trouble' so much. It's allowing me time to regroup and focus on the things I need to focus on.

Since then, our furkid of 18 1/2 yrs passed on (3 weeks ago today) from what the vets thought to be intestinal cancer. Prior to that, we were keeping an eye on a thyroid issue, adjusting medications, and taking turns giving him what often amounted to hourly care. And over the last few years, a very close family member of mine has also been very ill, and increasingly worse. The decision to not put my education on hold seemed a practical choice, knowing the need to make long-distance travel never far out of mind. Hopefully one can imagine how stressful that would be when your community, your state, and most of your country is practicing shelter at home. And while I don't want to discuss the details, suffice to say, no one is traveling right now despite the loosening of restrictions. I'm not planning any trips to theme parks any time soon either. No crowds for me. To be honest, another masked trip to COSTCO a couple weeks ago was anxiety-inducing by the time I got home.

But I'm busy with school. I'm focusing on my history MA at Hayward. We've been (& continue to be) online-only for now. I have my MA project approved and trying to figure out my research strategies and what sources I'll have available once I get the materials I already have organized. This Fall I'm taking a Public History Practicum course and a Graduate Portfolio course (both online for now.) I still need to keep working on my Public History project due in the Spring. Summer is the time to complete as much as possible.

I'm also reading for pleasure to alternate the Secondary source material I'll read for my research. I'm stepping away from my online MA program for now, and will likely ask to skip the Spring Semester as well. I think had things gone differently, I may have felt doing both were still feasible. There's a programing course I really was looking forward to taking, but that will have to wait until Summer 2021, I think. As of right now, (with the library & archives/ historical associations being closed) I am feeling unsure how much progress on my project I'll make. I know: Think positive!! Whatever. (I'm really starting to equate the phrase with the annoying suggestion certain people make to others to "Smile!")

The thing I would tell myself if I could go back in time, or if someone asked me if enrolling in two MA programs was possible or a good idea: Yes, it's possible.. but, if you have things going on in your life that may impact your ability to focus on your studies or participate in coursework (especially if the courses meet in person), then you need to give it some thought. Had I known now what I was looking at in the next year, I would have kicked myself and said "You know you don't want to, but YOU HAVE TO WAIT on that other program!"

I am an impatient person though, so I did what I thought was right. Maybe I would still be OK if a pandemic hadn't closed the libraries and historical societies. I know some professors might disagree, but it's been my experience that COVID has really impacted graduate research. But it also makes me feel that now more than ever, digital archives are an important asset. If digital archives were given more funding, more staffing; access to important documents and materials wouldn't be such a desperate issue when things like a hundred-year pandemic crop up. But "who knew?!" you're probably saying/ thinking. Another consideration is the amount of time, money, and travel for researchers who need access to out of state or overseas resources. And speaking of mobility, there's also those that are mobility impaired. Leaving one's residence isn't always an easy option for many, elderly or not. Why should research become difficult or impossible for some? So yeah, I've been rambling but access is important!

Back to the blog.. creating a blog will be part of my Graduate Portfolio course I've been told by some of my cohorts. While I won't be posting any of that material here, I think I should get back to blogging, so I can be more comfortable with the interface, (regardless where I end up posting my coursework). Practicing some basic HTML, etc., which means I may do some back-log posting. We'll see. This has become a bit of a novel, so ending for now. Hoping everyone stays safe and healthy as you go about your day.
Hurray! I managed my 5 books in 5 weeks challenge.. (from the 18th of December to the 18th of January 2019) these also included a few that got counted to last year's reading challenge.. Between books I started at the end of the school year, as well fresh books at the end of the year.. I got a total of 10 books finished over the break.. 5 in the old year, and 5 in the new..

I went ahead & upped my reading challenge for this year to 50 which I was unable to do last time I tried, so we'll see. I don't seem to have near as many texts to read for my courses this Spring (but I also have a short thesis paper (20pgs) to do so we'll see!)

I'll also try to post more here than just reading challenges. I broke my toe around Thanksgiving and only now starting to talk some walks and get out & about.. I definitely need the exercise.
MeekoRousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04551589891224879887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24687932.post-62057916109180758472019-01-01T11:02:00.000-08:002019-01-01T11:04:10.123-08:002018/2019 Reading Challenge!
So I got in about 52 of my 40 book challenge for 2018:

Several were for school of course.. and while I have a few I am reading right now on break (I hope to do 5 books in 5 weeks which should work as I've read 3 already) I am being ambitious or crazy and upping my count to 50 for 2019.. Maybe I'll have better luck in getting some Summer reading in...

**

I am currently reading
"The Land of Orange Groves and Jails: Upton Sinclair's California" edited by Lauren Coodley
"Why I am a Hindu" by Shashi Tharoor

and hope to read:
"Incarnations: India in 50 Lives" by Sunil Khilnani (fwiw I enjoyed "The Idea of India" very much! I thought it explained the politics of India better than a text I had to read for one of my classes, so I'm keeping it to read again)

"The Argumentative Indian: Writings on Indian History, Culture and Identity" by Amartya Sen

and hope to finish Diana Eck's "India: A Sacred Geography" (it's a bit of a slog for me honestly, and I'm not retaining much) but I may have better luck with John Keay's "India: A History" which I also left stranded over the Fall semester. This book reads much better and has a lot of the cross-discipline research that I appreciate. Am unsure if 'finishing' books you start last year (that weren't started in the last week) count but what the heck. I need all the help I can get.

I notice it's become harder for me to just relax and read unless it's for an assignment. There's a guilt attached to pleasure reading I never used to have.

I am about 10 books ahead of schedule, (not sure if GRE vocab cards should count as a book so not really counting that) but I barely put a dent in the STACKS of books I had waiting for me to read this Summer break. I can't say I spent the weeks doing much of anything but relexing and catching up on all the sleep I was missing out on this past school year.

I don't expect that I will get to read much outside of school-related things for a while here on out, but I will keep at it!
MeekoRousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04551589891224879887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24687932.post-45392279920466122042018-08-17T22:36:00.000-07:002018-08-18T14:51:11.960-07:00Oori Rice Triangles
I spent Friday failing most my GRE exam, and when we got back to the East Bay I was super hungry having not dared to leave the testing area to have a snack (it takes some time to wait to sign out & sign back in I observed while waiting to sign in to take my test).

Oori Rice Triangles had opened a while ago and so I was finally getting around to checking it out. It's a short walk up College from the Rockridge BART station (near Claremont). One of the things that made me wary of places like this is that the rice triangles are wrapped in nori. I don't eat fish of any kind, nor do I eat seaweed. I wasn't sure if I would find something I would want to order, but fortunately, they had plates (small and large).

I ordered a *small* rice plate with Teriyaki Chicken:

It's a simple dish that is served with shelled edamame. It was plenty of food and I was filled up. I think this is the sort of meal I should have head before heading to the testing center.

SeanYoda was with me and ordered the "3 Meat Plate" which was about $10.95 and was a choice of 3 types of meat served over rice:

He went with the Chicken as well as the Short Rib and Spicy Pork. He let me try his Short Rib and the Spicy Pork and I liked the Short Rib best of the three. The flavor was really good and a bonus was that the bones had been removed. I would probably order the small plate with Spare Rib next time.

SeanYoda said he'd give the Rice Triangles a go next time.

Drinks are from a cooler as well as water and hot tea.

You can learn more about the Market Street Railway here. If you want to see the streetcar livery yourself (not the cable cars), you'll want to hang out near the Ferry Building (or along the Embarcadero) or somewhere on Market. There are several cafes where you can see the streetcars just fine.

5 July 2018 I snapped a couple shots:

From here on out, I'm going to try and do a series of posts whenever I find one of my old pix or take new ones. I figure that way they're all in one place!

I am several in right now. School kept me busy (many of these titles are things I read for school or because of papers I was writing.

Most books below I've acquired at book sales over the last year and picked up at used bookstores when shopping for other books. I don't have them all gathered in one spot, but there's enough to give one an idea of what I'll be keeping busy with the next couple months:

My current reads (including a library book):

current reads...

and several of the books I hope to read:

Right now I"m having trouble relaxing enough to feel comfortable reading. I keep thinking I have homework I should be doing, so there's the relaxing and not feeling guilty for reading for pleasure right now. Hopefully, I can get it together & hurry up & relax!

It's the end of my first full year at the new school. I've been busy reading but not much else. I have a whole 'to do' list of things I want to catch up with this summer since I won't be taking any classes but here's s short list including finishing the books I am currently reading:

(haven't updated my Goodreads status in a bit but at least the titles are accurate)

00. Update my GoodReads status! (LOLz)
01. Finish "Rebel Lawyer" (it's not a very long book but had to temporarily set aside for papers & finals!)
02. make a to-do list of Spring Cleaning projects
03. schedule & take my GRE exam
04. sort through/organize my bookshelves (again) to find some space for new books
05. get at least 10 of my 'summer reading' titles read, (nothing too academic)
06. sort through/ organize all the photos that have auto-uploaded onto my Flickr account the last year.
07. Share (via back-dated blogger posts) anything interesting maybe.
08. attend a few History talks
09. catch up/ delete some ancient things off the DVR.
10. Get some walks in!! (got to lose that end of Semester binge weight!)
11. post new things/adventures
12. Walk the Golden Gate Bridge
13. Try some new cafes/ new food places.

I'm sure there's more... that's it for now.
MeekoRousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04551589891224879887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24687932.post-16780020598367502222018-04-28T01:59:00.000-07:002018-04-28T02:05:48.994-07:00Summer ReadingThe Bay Area Festival of Books is happening this weekend. I don't plan to attend (originally I did, so we'll see) as I have way too much to get done this weekend. I have Midterms next week. I was thinking I would at least walk the tables but then I gathered up the books I randomly purchased (intending to read when I have more time) and realized I have my summer reading stack:

I probably don't need to pick up more books at the Fest. I should read the ones I have and then send them back out into the world. Several of these I found on "The wall" at Half Price Books, and several I picked up at $1 Book Sale at the Doe Library. I think of all the titles I am looking forward to reading "The Disappearing Spoon (and Other Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World From the Periodic Table of Elements)" which I picked up at the campus bookstore for like $4. Last summer I read "Radium Girls" which was about the radium dial painters. This is totally different but it fills that niche for me I think: informative and fun ...science stuff.

Then there's my other things,(keeper books on my shelf):

So many titles (& a random library book) I'd like to read including the biography of August Vollmer. He was the Berkeley Chief of Police who brought many things that people take for granted in their local police department: the use of lie detector tests, bicycle (and later motorcycle) patrols, and he required his police officers to have college degrees. And he was born in New Orleans but made Berkeley his home. But no, I haven't read the book yet. This is just a few things I've learned about him over the years. So many books.

We'll see what I actually get done. I won't be taking a Summer course, so I have plenty of time to read, right? I had thought to put together a list of true crime/noir titles like Raymond Chandler, James M. Cain, James Elroy and Dashiell Hammett of course along with some other random shorts to check out from the library or read what titles I have here. I imagine there must be a literature course somewhere where you read stuff like that, but since I don't have space in my life for any literature classes, I would create my own reading list. Unfortunately, I may need to wait another year!

I have enough to read for now. MeekoRousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04551589891224879887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24687932.post-88730214292053875352018-04-23T16:00:00.000-07:002018-04-28T00:11:58.757-07:00Willard Middle School Mosaic

I know the year isn't quite over, but I am so happy to have time to read, to finish things I started. Here we are:

I read "Blink" for a speed reading class outside of school but at school. Not a fan of the book. Maybe someone else will like it, but I thought it and the class were tedious. Maybe I read faster at the end of class, but it was some valuable time I lost over two weekends. I think something like this is better in the Summer when you don't have classes or deadlines.

I read "Ishi's Brain" for my "Intro to History" class. I have a lot of thoughts on this book, this class, and the experience for another time but the book was frustrating. It did more to make me not trust historians than anything else I've read. You can easily blow off old writers as colonizers or people from an old school of thought, but when history does damage to a people, why do we keep that stuff in print? If the writer has some kind of personal angle, not an academic one, can you take them seriously? Should you consider it a legitimate work? I dunno. I'm being a bit vague, but I'm going to keep thinking about it.

I finally finished "The Heyday of Malcolm Margolin" which was a relief and happiness. It's one of these books I picked up and set down twice or so because I had other things and school to distract me. But I finished. It made me think about what good it does to work for a good company: a place where you get along with most everyone, that you are happy with your work and you look forward to the projects you get to do. I can only hope to find work like that one day again. Anyway, it's cool. It's good to have good work and I appreciated reading all the great stories that Heyday folks shared. I loved the stories Malcolm shared about his life in the Bay Area and in publishing. It was a good book. A keeper, (especially if you love books, the making of books.. or even California... or outdoors.. or...)

Of school things, I want to say "Colony in a Nation" and also "The New Jim Crow" (which I have yet to finish) was the best. "Colony in a Nation" reads super fast. It kind of compares the situation in Ferguson, MO. (and the rest of the country) to in the pre-American Revolutionary experience. There's a couple nice Franz Fanon quotes too. It was used for the Philosophy class I took but would have fit in any most any other class: American History, Political Theory, African American Studies (of course,) and others I guess. It's about Democracy and how there are two systems of justice. It talks about colonialism but it's also very relevant and current. There's a final chapter on campus policing which I thought was kind of out of place, but it too has a point to be made. The book is worth reading by everyone. It's written in a conversational style that is very approachable, so no deep academic rambling or words to look up. It won't change your life or make you lose 20 pounds, but it's cool. It'll give you some thinks to think on, maybe.

I haven't updated since before Fall Quarter started. So busy! My first Quarter at the new school and it took some getting used to. I was worried I wouldn't get any books read, but I did. I didn't bother with #NaNoWriMo though. I can't imagine trying to write a poem every day in November when the papers and finals were coming up!

Now that the Quarter is over I have some time to settle and ponder this new college experience.

1. I miss the Semesters schedule, that's the first thing. How I feel about the new school is something I'm still working on.

2. I'm not crazy about the commute. I hate the commute. It's 3 hrs out of my life there & back.I know for many people it's much worse. Folks coming from Stockton or San Jose! Suffice to say when you have to go in for nothing other than office hours or worse: a night class where you aren't actually learning anything, it gives you pause. I'm grateful when the instructors give you a heads up early in the day when they decide they are too sick or need to cancel.

3. Social aspect: it's a commuter school, so again like IUPUI I'm not meeting a lot of people, and a lot of the people I'm meeting so far aren't especially keen to form study groups or hang around campus to socialize. I don't blame them. If I don't need to be there, I'm not. However, if I have classes, I am pretty much stuck on campus all afternoon until my night class. Bonus study time, which isn't bad at all.

4... to be continued.

Re the commute: I'm going to work hard so I can get into CAL for grad school. I imagine (& I may be wrong) people take history a bit more serious there, (so not just because going to city college had me spoiled to come home for naps!) Too many people going through the motions of learning right now at the new college. I was told that's a city college attribute, but it's more of the same at the upper levels, which I find kind of disappointing. I thought when you become a Junior you find classes with people who love history, love learning. I have my doubts.

But I'll be starting a new quarter in 3 weeks, so it'll be another chance to experience new things and new people. I'm finally getting to take some California stuff as well. I'll be taking a Native California Anthropology class for my "D6" (I think?) one of the random upper levels they require; so I chose that. Also, I am (IMHO) 'retaking'' History of California. I took History 19 with the most amazing prof. back in Spring 2014 but the new school doesn't consider it an upper level, so... *shrug* California (& the West) is my major so why not look at it as a way to have some fun? I may pick up something new?

I have 2 other history classes I am taking as well... No Geography, unfortunately! Hopefully, I will get to take some in the Spring, (I added it as a minor, so I certainly hope so!) The plan is a BA in History, Geography Minor and a Ph.D. in History (and a side MLS/MLIS) if I'm not dead by then. LOLz (Old lady Student joke, there...)

I am enjoying the learning, despite how long I waited to go back. Tip: if you get GI Bill money & quit, don't let it run out on you. Also, the longer you wait to go back, the more culture shock you get. At City Collge, you are more likely to run into people in their 30s and up. Not so much at the commuter campus, (during the day anyway.) I have days where I'm physically exhausted... the commute takes a lot more out of me for some reason.

Like at the City College, I get sad some days because I think I'm the only one excited about learning, and on many days, feel like a fool. I get tired of raising my hand. I get tired of participating. I also get the impression some of the profs hate being there as much as my classmates, which is also depressing. I have days when I don't want to go back, so I have to find the enthusiasm and energy in myself to do it. When I'm there it's the people that still seem happy to share knowledge that get me enthusiastic and motivated. Those people I am so very grateful for and excited to spend my time learning from.
20 books read.. 4 books ahead of schedule.

So far so good with the reading.. My last semester at BCC pursuing my History AA-T had me reading a LOT for my various courses. So now that summer is here I am hoping to read more things for pleasure if I am able. I plan to be taking an intro drawing class as a present to myself for getting my Associates for transfer..

For now I am relaxing my brain with some beautifully descriptive scenes of Southeast Alaska (Sitka into Wrangell Island) by John Muir.. "Travels in Alaska" seems like just the thing I need after pouring over Machiavelli and Nietzsche!

I haven't figured out what is on my Summer Read TBR list yet but I think besides a mix of some of the many Heyday titles I've had waiting for me, I'll get to a couple books I purchased at the Cal Day Book Sale, and random books I've found or picked up on my walks:

We'll see, right?

I pass Arbor on my walk back from the many visits to Kaiser over the last few months (getting blood work mainly) but on what was hopefully my last visit for a while, I treated myself to a nice meal of yogurt & tea in between appointments..

I had some of my last finals work to finish for school so Arbor is a good place to sit quietly in work. People are usually respectfully hushed when enjoying their coffee or lunch there.. and they have some large tables to sit and eat and have room to work.

Strawberries were huge!

the granola was so good.. I didn't think to ask if they made it themselves or where it came from.. If I thought I could get granola like this from a package I would, but I definitely would order the yogurt and gronola from Arbor again.. so good. I was happy and the serving was plenty as an early lunch/late breakfast.. (which is what this was for me.)
One of Nigel Sussman's many grafart pieces around Berkeley. This one seen from the #6 Bus as we make the turn onto Telegraph. This is on the Dwight Way side of Han's Bistro, (formerly Bleeker Bistro.) at 2498 Telegraph Ave.
